About EMBS
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) is the world’s largest international society of biomedical engineers. The organization’s 11,000 members reside in some 97 countries around the world. EMBS provides its members with access to the people, practices, information, ideas and opinions that are shaping one of the fastest growing fields in science. About our Chapter
President
Jacob Gasienica As president, and with the help of the other board members, I work to provide opportunities for students to gain experience in bioengineering and apply the knowledge they gain in their schoolwork. I myself am an undergraduate bioengineering student at UIC on a pre-medicine track. Outside of school and EMBS, I work on research and love to read, play soccer, and cook in my free time. |
Vice President
Lara Nammari I am a fourth year in bioengineering with a concentration in neural engineering. I joined the EMBS board in hopes of helping other students explore and get hands on experience in the field of bioengineering, so they can find out their true interests. I do research in Dr. Esmailbeigi's Wearable Technology and Sensory Enhancement lab. Outside of academics I like to play the cello and exercise. |
Secretary
Dionna Bidny As Secretary, I have the wonderful opportunity of connecting with the UIC EMBS chapter’s interdisciplinary, enthusiastic, and driven student body, of which I am delighted to be a part. I am a third year bioengineering student and future surgeon, with an interest in biomechanics. In addition, I am employed at UIC’s Makerspace and am currently working on an independent research project in music therapy. Outside of academia, I love to bake, lift, and watch performing arts of every kind. I have also played piano for 14 years and enjoy practicing and performing in my spare time. |
Project Manager
John Jarka I am a third year bioengineeering undergraduate, with plans to move on to medical school following graduation. My role within EMBS is focused on the assistance and management of our various project teams. I help guide the goals and schedules of the various projects, and I help organize technical workshops to develop organization members' practical capabilities. My interests, outside of EMBS, include exercising, reading, and volunteering. |
Treasurer
Akshara Acharya I am a third year bioengineering, undergraduate student and my concentration is cell and tissue engineering. As a Treasurer of EMBS, I believe it’s important for students to gain experience in the bioengineering field and take advantage of all the great opportunities that this society has to offer. Outside of school, I love to travel and catch up on my favorite T.V. shows. |

Previous Board Members
President (2017 - 2018)
Luke Pretizie EMBS is one of the resources I have used most during my time at UIC. Its Chronus Mentorship Program has helped me connect with professionals from around the world and has allowed me to receive advice that I would not be able to ascertain from any other source. Its IEEE backing of more than 421,000 members from over 160 countries ensures that participants within student chapters have the resources necessary to exercise their creativity and problem solving skills. Most important to me was the opportunity it gave me to partake in a leadership position, empowering me with the soft skills that a university curriculum cannot provide. |
